Called By Name
Today’s story is taken from John’s gospel. In John’s gospel, we see Mary Magdalene, who loved Jesus dearly, goes to Jesus’ empty tomb to weep. There she meets Jesus, although she does not recognize Him at first. But when Jesus calls out to her by name, Mary recognizes Jesus and runs to the other disciples to tell them the good news.
This story reminds us that our Lord knows us personally, by name, and that Lord calls us by our name. When Mary heard Jesus call out to her, her heavy heart was immediately uplifted.
Why? What does it mean to be personally be known by Jesus, and be called by name?
As we read and reflect on the story for this week, I invite you to think and reflect on this question: What does it mean for me that God knows me and calls me by name?
