Community of the Word: 25 Years of St. Timothy Presbyterian Church

Purpose of Project

2021 marks the 25th Anniversary of St. Timothy Presbyterian Church.

How has God worked in and through this community of faith over the past 25 years? Where might God be leading us for the next 25 years?

These are the central questions of reflection. This project seeks to detect God’s hand in the events and people of this church over the past 25 years. We believe that God brought this community into existence, shaped it and is leading it into the future as well.

The story of St. Timothy can be thought of as a large river. A river begins with a source or headwater. The source of the St. Timothy river is God who brought this community into being. That initial stream is joined together by many tributaries or streams. Each stream that joins the river adds to it and alters the shape of the river. External marks like rocks and terrain will also shape the river. In the same way, St. Timothy has been shaped by the many people who have joined this community, and it has been shaped by the context surrounding it. In an equally important way, each stream that joins the river becomes a part of it and is shaped by it. Those who became a part of St. Timothy not only shaped the community, but were deeply shaped by it.

Background of Project

This project reflects on both the shaping of the community and how the community shaped people.

The central stream that runs throughout the entire history of St. Timothy Presbyterian Church is Rev. In Kee Kim, the founding minister of the church. His life and ministry are deeply intertwined with the story of St. Timothy. Many people have shaped and been shaped by the community. We hear from those who have been a part of the shaping and being shaped. As the title of this project suggests, the common flow throughout this story is that of the Word. Critical engagement with the Word of God has been a central feature of this community from day 1. We reflect on what the message of St. Timothy has been over the past 25 years. And finally, we conclude with a reflection on the central question: how has God shaped and moved in this community?  The story of St. Timothy is ultimately the story of God in and through this church. God has touched and shaped each community of faith differently. In what unique ways has God moved in this community? And what hints does that leave us for how God might be leading us in the future?
