Hi-C Lock-In Recap – November 4-5th, 2022
Written by: Liam Johnstone | Photo Credits: Lauren Lee
After many years of delay, the Hi-Cs finally had their first lock-in. While lock-ins usually primarily consist of spending the night and simply sleeping, getting rest was one of the activities we unfortunately didn’t spend too much time focusing on. However, in the picture above, Sarah, one of the counsellors, couldn’t help herself and fell asleep in the one of the pews for a powernap. Apart from our lack of sleeping, we started off the night with dinner followed by a time of discussion.

After meaningful discussion in pairs, everybody headed downstairs to play some fun games! Except these games were based off a show that we all know and love, Squid Game! The off-brand games played were known as Crab Games and consisted of the iconic Red Light Green Light, a Dalgona inspired paper cutting game, as well as a platform game where if you fall off, you are eliminated!
As the Crab Games finished up, a new game was introduced, a scavenger hunt that led the Hi-C all around the church! Groups were made and then given an initial clue, then they were sent off to figure out each clue one by one, finding powerups along the way which could either help them, or punish another team. These games were tons of fun and if the Hi-C plays any game which involves running around the church, they always love it.

After the games, we went back to the Fellowship Hall to enjoy some halloween candy and play a couple rounds of Mafia. Then we decided to go back to the sanctuary to sing some karaoke. Here you can see Liam and Lucas singing along to Rick Astley’s ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ as well as the Chung sisters getting ready to sing everyone’s favourite Frozen song, ‘Love Is An Open Door’.

We were so happy to have had this lock-in and we hope everyone had a ton of fun and enjoyed all the fun activities we did instead of sleeping! We hope to see everyone at our next gathering! Once again, thank you to the wonderful execs for planning this event 😀
Spooky Gathering Recap – October 21st, 2022

To keep our gathering relatively holy during the halloween season, the execs proudly prepared a spooky gathering! Starting off with a pizza dinner, we were able to catch up with one another. After dinner, we got into discussion groups to learn about how other people spent their weeks and what they’re planning to dress up as for Halloween.
Afterwards, everyone got into groups of 5 to decorate spooky theme chocolate cookie houses!! Except there was a twist: 2 people lost their ability to see, 2 people lost their ability to talk, and only 1 person could speak, but could not touch anything.
As the clock ticked ominously for 30 mins, the groups collaborated together to create the best haunted house! The hi-c were given the opportunity to name their houses and the 2 people who weren’t able to see the progression of the creation had the responsibility of advertising the houses to the judges, Lauren and Pastor Dave!
Afterwards, the Hi-C gathered in the fellowship hall to play a spooky game! Everyone was running around the church in the dark with murderers (fake ones, of course) chasing innocent civilians. *clap clap* to Juel, Taylor, and Samantha for getting caught the least amount of times during the game.
We hope everyone had fun and enjoyed spending time with each other. We hope to see everyone at our next gathering soon!! Once again, thank you to the wonderful execs for planning this event 😀

Hi-C Gathering Recap – October 7th, 2022

Amidst a flurry of assignments, tests and extracurriculars that mercilessly wear us students down to the bone, hi-c gatherings are a much needed escape from this anxiety-inducing world. They provide a safe space for teens to destress, laugh without judgement, and bond with others heart to heart; past the superficiality and the differences that would normally set us apart.Â
This past Friday, on October 7th, the hi-c came together at church to eat delicious Chinese food, catch up with one another, and play like children once again in a competitive, yet friendly manner. With friends we haven’t seen in a while and new faces we’ve never met, we are so blessed to have gotten along harmoniously.
For the games and activities prepared by our very talented execs, the hi-c first played musical chairs. It’s funny how the simplest games can stir up the most authentic joy within a human being. With the help of a guessing game icebreaker, the hi-c were put into pairs that eventually became their designated teams for the mini Olympics happening shortly afterwards. Each pair represented a different country and funnily enough, Korea ultimately reigned victorious (I promise the result was purely coincidental).
I can’t forget to mention the most memorable part of the gathering… the dance challenges!! Who knew we had this many naturally talented dancers within our community. I’m sure Crush and J-Hope would be very proud.
Â
A special thanks to the execs, Lauren, and Pastor Dave for consistently leading such fun-filled and exciting gatherings every month!! And a huge shout out to Juyeong and Hailey for taking the courage to come out to the gathering and participate so enthusiastically! Lastly, thanks to all the members in our hi-c for the life they bring to this community; your individual presence truly makes all the difference. We missed everyone who couldn’t make it, but we hope to see you next time!!
