Opens Arms Toronto is an organization that was formed to help children in South Korean welfare centres (orphanages). The focus is to assist orphans that have aged-out of the system. This summer, Lauren and Jocelyn had the opportunity to tutor Yura Kang, one of the participants of the Open Arms program. They helped her with becoming more comfortable speaking English, working with her to assist in her pronunciation and developing her vocabulary.
During this time, we were given the opportunity to meet with Yura on a weekly basis and teach her English one-on-one. We went through worksheets, read books together, and engaged in open conversation to help enhance her English skills. Yura has improved immensely from the time we first met her to now!
It was such a gratifying experience watching her grow from the first meeting to the last, and it was amazing to build a relationship with someone who has so much potential to be great. I’m thankful that we got the chance to do this, and I wish Yura all the best in her future in nursing.

Tutoring Yura was such an amazing opportunity and I’m so thankful that I had the chance to do it! I remember when we first met. She was hesitant when talking because she wasn’t very confident speaking in English. However, as the weeks went by, I could see her improving so much! Her vocabulary expanded and we were able to converse comfortably in English. We found similar interests and developed a strong bond within the short time we had! Yura also joined us for Youth Camp and participated in many activities with the kids. Seeing her gradually getting closer to the kids and openly conversing with them was so good to see. I really enjoyed the time I spent with Yura! I will never forget her soft and joyful laughter, and I wish her the best in all that she does! Good luck Yura! I will miss you! 😊❤️
