Where Is My King?

Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.’ Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfil what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, ‘Out of Egypt I have called my son.’

The Massacre of the Infants

When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he was infuriated, and he sent and killed all the children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had learned from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what had been spoken through the prophet Jeremiah:

 ‘A voice was heard in Ramah,

   wailing and loud lamentation,

Rachel weeping for her children;

   she refused to be consoled, because they are no more.’

–       Matthew 2:13-18

The wise men asked king Herod where the child was who was born king of the Jews. The wise men didn’t seem to be so wise. Because of their question, so many innocent children lost their lives. They assumed that the king would be born where the power was.

Where is our King? Where are we looking for our King?

Almost at the end of his book, Matthew recorded this: “for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” (Matthew 25:35-36)

Lord, help me find you in my sisters and brothers who are suffering. Amen.

주님은 어디 계신가?

그들이 떠난 후에 주의 사자가 요셉에게 현몽하여 이르되 헤롯이 아기를 찾아 죽이려 하니 일어나 아기와 그의 어머니를 데리고 애굽으로 피하여 내가 네게 이르기까지 거기 있으라 하시니 요셉이 일어나서 밤에 아기와 그의 어머니를 데리고 애굽으로 떠나가 헤롯이 죽기까지 거기 있었으니 이는 주께서 선지자를 통하여 말씀하신 바 애굽으로부터 내 아들을 불렀다 함을 이루려 하심이라. 이에 헤롯이 박사들에게 속은 줄 알고 심히 노하여 사람을 보내어 베들레헴과 그 모든 지경 안에 있는 사내아이를 박사들에게 자세히 알아본 그 때를 기준하여 두 살부터 그 아래로 다 죽이니 이에 선지자 예레미야를 통하여 말씀하신 바 라마에서 슬퍼하며 크게 통곡하는 소리가 들리니 라헬이 그 자식을 위하여 애곡하는 것이라 그가 자식이 없으므로 위로 받기를 거절하였도다 함이 이루어졌느니라.

–     마태복음 2:13-18

동방박사들은 헤롯에게 가서 유대인의 왕의 탄생에 대해 물어보았다. Wise men이 그렇게 wise 한 것 같지 않다. 때문에 수 많은 아이들이 죽음을 당했다. 그들은 당연히 힘이 있는 곳에 왕이 있다고 생각했다.

우리의 왕은 어디 있는가? 우리는 어디서 우리의 왕을 찾고 있는가?

마태는 그의 책 거의 끝에서 이것을 기록한다. “내가 주릴 때에 너희가 먹을 것을 주었고 목마를 때에 마시게 하였고 나그네 되었을 때에 영접하였고 헐벗었을 때에 옷을 입혔고 병들었을 때에 돌보았고 옥에 갇혔을 때에 와서 보았느니라.” (마태복음 25:35-36)

주님, 내 주위에 고통 당하는 형제 자매들 속에 있는 주님을 만나게 하소서. 아멘.
