Reading the “Time”

Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus.’ Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

Memory Verse: “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” (John 12:24)

In the Gospel John, Jesus kept saying, “My time has not yet come.” But in today’s Scripture passage, Jesus finally said that his time came. Jesus lived his life, reading and waiting for the “time.” When the “time” came, the first thing Jesus said was this: “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” Jesus’ life was a life of the single grain.

Lord, thank you for accepting the difficult “time” and becoming a single grain that died and bore much fruit.  Amen.

때를 읽으며 사는 삶

명절에 예배하러 올라온 사람 중에 헬라인 몇이 있는데 그들이 갈릴리 벳새다 사람 빌립에게 가서 청하여 이르되 선생이여 우리가 예수를 뵈옵고자 하나이다 하니 빌립이 안드레에게 가서 말하고 안드레와 빌립이 예수께 가서 여쭈니 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 인자가 영광을 얻을 때가 왔도다. 내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 한 알의 밀이 땅에 떨어져 죽지 아니하면 한 알 그대로 있고 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺느니라. 자기의 생명을 사랑하는 자는 잃어버릴 것이요 이 세상에서 자기의 생명을 미워하는 자는 영생하도록 보전하리라.

암송구절: “한 알의 밀이 땅에 떨어져 죽지 아니하면 한 알 그대로 있고 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺느니라.” (요한복음 12:24)

요한복음을 보면 예수님은 계속 “내 때가 아직 이르지 아니하였노라”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그런데 오늘 본문에 비로서 예수님은 “인자가 영광을 얻을 때가 왔도다”라고 때가 이른 것을 말씀하십니다. 예수님의 삶은 “때”를 읽는 삶이었습니다. 그 때에 따라 그의 삶을 사셨습니다. 그 때가 임했다고 말씀하시면서 제일 처음 하신 말씀이 한 알의 밀알이 죽지 아니하면 그대로 있고 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺는다고 하셨습니다. 그 분의 삶은 한 알의 밀알의 삶이었습니다.

주님, 어려운 때를 받아들이시고 죽어서 많은 열매를 맺은 밀알이 되신 주님의 사랑에 감사합니다. 아멘.
