Psalm 8
O Lord, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouths of babes and infants
you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,
to silence the enemy and the avenger.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars that you have established;
what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them?
Yet you have made them a little lower than God,
and crowned them with glory and honour.
You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under their feet,
all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O Lord, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
This week’s passage talks about God’s great majesty over all things in this universe – and yet, He cares for us and has placed us in a position of honour, where we do not deserve. With this honour God bestows to us, we also inherit a responsibility to uphold and represent God’s will here on earth. That our actions be responsible to all the creatures and land he has created, and most of all, to all of God’s children, no matter their age, gender, religion, or race.
Reflecting on the events of this week and all the activity surrounding anti-racism, I see this passage as an opportunity to reflect on the honour God has bestowed on us, and how we should set His example by pursuing unity and peaceful justice, despite the temptation to lean on pointing out differences and acting in violence.
The songs for this week focuses on God’s ultimate glory and on keeping our hearts and souls open to hearing God’s message, living our lives in His example.
