A few years ago, we started a wonderful tradition where we kick off the new year with a Prayer Retreat. We use the time to reflect upon the new theme for the upcoming year. The time has been really special for me. Here are some highlights that I took away.
The past two years, we’ve been really blessed to have Jonathan Cho lead us in praise. It’s a totally different retreat when he’s there. He usually doesn’t talk or say much while leading praise but at this retreat, we got to hear him share his thoughts about how praise lifts and supports him and he described the process he goes in using it in his own healing. It was great to hear.
Ruth was our group leader. The group discussions are a great part of the time we spend together. It’s a time to share thoughts, questions, observations and insights. Daniel Jong was in my group. He had a some great reflections and insights to share. It is nice to hear everyone’s questions and comments as we reflect upon our individual journeys. It’s helpful and the retreat is a great setting for this. We don’t always get this opportunity to seek answers together.
We had prayer time together where we were given freedom to walk around and pray for each other. It was maybe a bit awkward at first but it was a great opportunity to connect with each other, ask and share prayer topics, and offer support. It would be a wonderful vision to see us become a community that is comfortable sharing and providing our support.
Food and mealtime together is a main reason I think a lot of people come. It’s another setting to share what’s going on in our lives and also to reflect upon the sessions led by Rev Kim. Worship is a state of feeling the presence of God. It’s about God, not ourselves. It has the ability to transform, empower and heal us.
I think our worship service has become a source of power for many of us. I realize there is still much more we could be getting out of it. I hope that this year, we can be more intentional about preparing for worship and reflect upon the healing power it has for us. I’m looking forward to a great new year, 2018. I hope that next year, you will be able to join us.
