In casual reflection (especially as to how I came to Christianity), I used to jokingly (but half seriously) say that there was no coincidence in life. However, when it came to eldership, I could not accept that it would be part of God’s plan. From a bit of pressure from a friend and personal conviction(?) that I would not be selected, I agreed to be on the ballot. Little did I know how it would turn out, I was caught completely off guard when “the” phone call came from Rev Chung…
Let alone I felt unprepared and unqualified, I sometimes felt a little like a visitor (mainly from lack of relationship I built with other congregation members), hence I was very worried and even somewhat troubled. However, I soon realized that God calls and uses us “as is” however unprepared or unqualified. In the past 6 years, eldership has been more of my own personal learning and growing experiences (than serving the church/others) that nothing else in the world would ever render such a precious and fulfilling spiritual opportunity. One of the most thankful gifts from God through the eldership was a noticeable change in how I “see” and “discern” things. I strongly invite and encourage people to consider and join this wonderful journey.
