As the newest elder to the St Tim’s session, this first year has been such an unforgettable one. While no one could have predicted the situation we are in today, it’s been a truly amazing experience so far to see how we have managed the crisis together as a church, and a privilege to serve God and the church in this way. I can’t say that I could have prepared any better before becoming an elder, and for anyone that is thinking or considering becoming an elder, it’s understandable that you may feel you are lacking the time, discernment, relationships, or spiritual readiness, as these are the same emotions and questions that I had for myself. However, I have found that God often calls upon us to take on new challenges and responsibilities that we often don’t feel prepared for, and through an act of faith, I truly believe that He never puts us in situations that we cannot handle.
In many ways, I always felt the most spiritually connected with God and myself when I was serving the church. And while I know that time is precious for everyone, I can honestly say that being an elder has allowed me to witness first hand the love, hard work, and dedication of our congregation, staff, and my other fellow session members and that is the most meaningful to me as an elder. I could not imagine a better way to spend some of my extra time.
