Chapter 2: God, Creator and Ruler
2.1 God Creates and Rules
2.1.1
The Living God is Lord,
Creator of all, Sustainer and Ruler of the universe.
In the seasons and the harvests,
in the rise and fall of nations,
God’s goodness and judgement are present.
All events in this world
are under the sovereign care of the eternal God.
The Arc of God’s Universe
“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
This was a famous quote that Martin Luther King, Jr. often used in his campaign for social and economic justice. It’s easy to admire his work in hindsight, but during his lifetime, the context was often bleak and dark. Hopes of upending deeply entrenched racism seemed like a pipedream. His dream for a world without disparity and prejudice seemed so far off. Yet his belief in a world that would ultimately reflect God’s goodness drove him to the end of his life.
The belief in a God who is ultimately sovereign upheld the Jews through persecution, exile and oppression. Their faith sustained them.
Our world is filled with calamity, injustice and suffering. Our own lives face moments of darkness and sorrow. Cruel things happen to us. We are at a loss to explain why things are the way they are.
In times of uncertainty and darkness, do we believe that God’s goodness and sovereign care are present? The journey of faith is seeing God’s grace through all of the ungracious things that happen in our lives and in the world. Seeing God’s grace in these murky realities of life is when faith becomes real. That is when it becomes a living faith. In a living God.
Dear God, may I see your grace at work in my life and in this world.
